SOLUTION DESIGN WITHIN COMPLEXITY
Since we have experienced that Objective solutions within complexity invoke conflict from special interest; and little is implemented when there is an attempt to “solve any problem with ideal solutions”. The lower cost and more effective strategy within Non Linear environments is to seek a series of “small changes” that are designed to create “subjective” changes, even staying away by strategy from confronting the MAIN ISSUE!! The focus is to “change the perceptive environment” with subjective inputs.
(We will hopefully observe over time the change and NEW approach by the Obama led US administration; towards the management of Terror and erstwhile “Rogue Nations” who were declared terrorist states. Even the Words like War on Terror and religion specific references WILL change, if there is to be any improvement in global tensions).
SELF CHANGE is the need and is always the most difficult because linear logic prefers to assign blame to external elements. For old school managers, their LINEAR perceptions have been ingrained in their psyche over centuries blending management education with traditional beliefs. Most perceive “self change” to overcome a challenge as a sign of individual WEAKNESS, and see it as DEFEAT or a COMPROMISE. They have been taught to take on “head on” any opposing force. This left brain MACHO and very TEXAN logic considers self change to be defeatist or a “wimpish response to a challenge”.
Hopefully this will change and we will see more managers and decision makers “dissolve what they believe are principles- and recognize that in reality they were merely egos”.
Perhaps the unresolved global dilemmas and the recent experience of Wars can serve as examples. In the Non Linear Era there is no longer a winner in any conflict. It is always LOSE LOSE for both sides because no longer is there any intent to “take over another country or another society”. The winner is now likely to be the “greatest loser in fiscal terms in addition to costs of winning” because the “destroyer is financially and morally responsible to rebuild what he has destroyed including pay for the rehabilitation of the population”.
THIS LOSS IS FAR GREATER THAN THE COST OF WAR & A POOR RESULT OR REWARD FOR AN EGOISTICAL VICTORY!!
EVEN our enemy is different and the majority of our “defence establishments” are not trained or equipped for War with the new enemy; who is no longer a country nor is it “a people or a society”.
In this Non Linear World “ the greatest threat to millions in a region comes from just a few hundred and globally a few thousand enemies”. Even in commerce and technology we now find that it is the very smallest change that alters the “equation”. This paradox is self indicative of how despite our honest intent, our past skills are failing.
EMULATION of past successes has been our traditional source of motivation and solution design. HOWEVER IF WE NOW BELIEVE THAT THE FUTURE is no longer emulating the PAST; THEN THIS ACCEPTANCE REQUIRES NEW Management Skills that do not seek solutions from past models!
“Our World has funda-mentally changed – now it is our turn!”
