CHAOS - FOLLOWS A FORECASTABLE PATTERN
Non Linear Thinking believes that in this Era of uncertainty we need to identify a “science within chaos”. The increasing frequency of chaos requires us to improve our understanding in non technical terms so as to prevent or be better prepared to manage uncertainty and its chaotic effect.
We can use Non Linear thinking tools to develop a matching perceptive view on CHAOS where it can be seen as a ‘PATTERN'
WE WILL NOT ATTEMPT TO FORECAST NATURAL DISASTERS AND NATURE INDUCED CHAOS HERE. WE WILL CONSIDER ONLY SOCIO-ECONOMIC TURMOIL.
(DISASTER MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS ARE HOWEVER WELL ADDRESSED BY NLT)
WE need to start with an acknowledgement that socio-economic CHAOS is almost entirely caused by HUMAN ACTION or INACTION.
Scientists are often embarrassed when reminded of the many “scientific inventions that were a result of accidental discovery during research and quite far removed from the linear processes defined for the intended discovery. While we believe that the study of chaos is important as a science; it is paradoxically hampered by its definition which makes us bias and we perceive chaos to be unnatural because it does not have a recognizable pattern. Our analytical systems assume that a recognizable SEQUENCE or PATTERN is necessary to reveal the dynamics of an activity”
THE MIND NOW NEEDS TO IDENTIFY THE DISRUPTION WITHIN A PATTERN as an un-patterned indicator that provides clues for better management of the “disorder”.
Non Linear Thinking would perhaps define Cancer to be a NON LINEAR disease. While we are able to recognize the types of cancer and have extensive experience & knowledge of the EFFECTS of cancer on the body; we are unable to identify THE CAUSE WITHIN THE BODY ! While Cancer is considered “malignant” it is paradoxically “benign” when it “starts”
because we are unable to detect it TILL it physically disturbs the touches another organ or effects a body function.
For Non Linear problems the non-conformity of the event to the past or to familiar patterns, should NOT become the reason for our denial. It is no longer obligatory that every event should satisfy a predetermined chronology or follow an expected sequence in order for it to be understood.
Those who disagree may consider ending any further reading; as this logic and belief continues through this writing.
The word “chaos” was coined for events that appear to be haphazard and without direction. The word itself serves as a convenient excuse that absolves the mind of responsibility for further study - because the structured mind is comfortable when it discovers a sequence and rhythm. We should thus acknowledge that:
Our conventional scientific systems and linear thinking perhaps unintentionally restricts the human mind to study those events that are perceived to have a sequential or patterned development”.
Energy, Sound, Light, disease, growth, life and death have all been ordained and defined by man and modern science in patterns, wavelengths, lifecycles and Frequencies.
Those working outside these areas were considered to be “blasphemous” by traditionalists and in modern times the few who do WORK outside these areas are classified as elitist and segmented as the Creative ones, Right Brained or euphemistically “OUT OF THE BOX” thinkers. To many they are considered to be NUTS!!
I believe that the study of CHAOS should become a part of basic study specifically for youth BECAUSE they have a greater stake in our uncertain future. The young are in majority in India and need to be taught to accept CHANGE as the norm.
What we do need is an alternative word for CHANGE which has been ingrained in the mind as a DISRUPTIVE event. The terminology being recommended and used here in place of change is “NEWSIT” (A New Situation). This as a start would reduce the perceptive impact of change, allowing easier adaptation skills that will start to look at NEWSIT as an opportunity rather than a disruption.
In the past and within the ‘linear era' ADAPTATION & ACCEPTANCE were skills UNIQUE to the very few who were considered to have an open mind. These skills must now become ‘normal & necessary traits' for the majority.
Can we attempt to scientifically correlate chaos with our social, political or economic chaos?
